Harakat Ashab al Yamin al-Islamiyya: Understanding the new terrorist organization

Emergence of New Terrorist Group in Europe

A new terrorist organization, thought to have links to the Iranian government, surfaced in Europe last week. This group, called Harakat Ahab al-Yamin al-Islamiyah, has claimed responsibility for a series of four attacks aimed at Jewish targets across the continent.

The first incident occurred on Monday when an explosives attack targeted a synagogue in Liège, Belgium. This was quickly followed by an arson attack at a synagogue in Rotterdam on Friday night and an explosive detonation at a Jewish school in Amsterdam the next evening.

Additionally, there are reports connecting this group to further attacks on Jewish institutions in Greece on Wednesday, although detailed information regarding these attacks remains scarce.

Joe Truzman, a senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, expressed his initial thoughts on the organization after the first attack. He found their statement somewhat unprofessional, but after reviewing videos from the group, he began to sense there might be more depth to their operations.

Truzman speculated that the ongoing conflict in Iran probably pushed this group to undertake these attacks. He commented, “There are suspicions. This organization seems to have direction and backing.” He went on to suggest that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) might be active in Europe, possibly targeting dissidents, though he acknowledged ties to Iraqi militias as well.

Truzman also mentioned the potential for more attacks, noting that the videos produced by the group are gaining attention and could inspire acts of anti-Semitism. He raised concerns that those already inclined to radicalization might be influenced by this content. Up to now, the attacks have been relatively simple, but he warned they could escalate to targeting individuals in busy areas during the day.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has indicated connections between this group and the Iranian regime, labeling it a “jihadist group associated with Iranian proxies.” They’ve underscored the IRGC’s ongoing role in sponsoring and exporting terrorism globally.

Observers have made links between these incidents and the war in Iran, with the World Jewish Congress warning that Ahab al-Yamin could be part of an expanding Iranian proxy network. They urged governments to take this threat seriously and dismantle the groups behind these attacks to ensure the safety of Jewish communities.

Concerns were echoed by Israel’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs, who noted that these attacks signify a troubling trend, indicating an expansion of terrorist networks linked to the Iranian Axis into Europe.

Currently, the State Department has not provided clarity on whether it has been monitoring Ahab al-Yamin or if it plans to issue any travel warnings for Americans regarding Jewish institutions abroad.

In light of these events, Israel’s National Security Council has recently advised its citizens traveling abroad to avoid items that might identify them as Jewish or Israeli and to steer clear of locations associated with those identities, especially following a string of shootings at a Toronto synagogue earlier this month.
