The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) “representation guidelines” have declared that describing transgender athletes as “biological male” or “biological female” is “harmful.”
Recently Updated Guidelines The guidelines instruct Olympic media and other media covering future Olympic Games on how to treat certain identities. They also include a list of “problematic” terms, with “biological male” and “biological female” being at the top of the list.
“A person’s sex is not determined solely by their genetic information and aspects of their biology may be changed by undergoing gender reassignment treatment,” the IOC guide states.
The IOC said in a press release that the guidelines are intended to “raise awareness of the differences in how female athletes and women’s sports are portrayed compared to male athletes. The guidelines also offer tips on how to challenge “gender-based preconceptions” and “stereotypes.”
“The guidelines provide a practical checklist and advice to ensure that all athletes, gender equal and fair, are represented in all forms of media and communication,” the report said.
according to Fox NewsThe guidelines also include a short article on “the main barriers” to equal representation in the world of sport, such as how female athletes “receive less visibility” when compared to male athletes when featured in the media. They also offer guidance on how to write about female athletes competing in a non-sexist manner.
In one example, she said, Michael PhelpsJournalists should write, “She is an exceptional athlete.”
The guide also touches on the reality of the gender pay gap and how female athletes are commented on more than their male counterparts, and includes comments from IOC officials condemning sexism.
The guide quoted Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, chair of the IOC Human Rights Advisory Commission, as saying that “stereotypes, discriminatory social norms and lack of representation remain some of the most pervasive barriers to gender equality around the world.”
“Problematic words” to avoid are: born male, born female, biological male, biological female, genetic male, genetic female, male to female (MtF), and female to male (FtM).
“Such language may be dehumanizing and inaccurate when describing gender-diverse transgender athletes and athletes,” the document states. “It is always preferable to highlight an individual’s actual gender rather than potentially calling into question their identity by referring to the gender category listed on their birth certificate.”
