On Friday’s CNN International broadcast of “First Move,” CNN economic and political commentator The Washington Post Columnist and PBS NewsHour special correspondent Katherine Rampell said 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris’ economic policy speech differed from materials her campaign released about her “price gouging” proposals.
“It’s interesting that she seemed to tone down some of the rhetoric about price gouging that she put out in her campaign earlier this week,” Rampell said. “If you look at the materials the campaign sent out to reporters a few days ago, which I’m sure you received, it was about penalizing companies for raising prices above cost, and it basically mirrored the language of a price control bill currently before the Senate proposed by Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Casey seems to think she supported her bill. He put out a press release today saying she did, but the speech itself was much more toned down and basically talked about enforcing existing antitrust laws. So, I think, [they] I might echo some of the criticism they’ve received.”
