Kamala Harris Criticizes Trump’s Actions in Venezuela
Former Vice President Kamala Harris spoke out on Saturday night against the Trump administration’s capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, labeling the operation as “illegal” and “unwise.” In a post on X, she acknowledged that while Maduro is indeed a “brutal” and “illegitimate” dictator, she argued that Trump’s actions in Venezuela “will not make America safer, stronger, or more affordable.”
“Donald Trump’s actions in Venezuela will not make America safer, stronger, or more affordable,” Harris stated. “Just because Mr. Maduro is a brutal and illegitimate dictator doesn’t mean the action taken was justified. We’ve seen how this plays out before.”
Harris expressed concern about the historical consequences: “Conflicts waged for regime change, often tied to oil interests, have led to chaos, and it’s the American families who end up bearing the cost.”
Her remarks came shortly after the Trump administration confirmed the Maduros’ capture and their extradition as part of what was called Operation Absolute Solution. Harris criticized the administration for seemingly prioritizing oil interests over genuine efforts to combat drug trafficking or foster democracy.
“Americans are tired of this. They don’t want to be misled anymore. This is not about drugs or democracy; it’s about oil and Trump’s desire to act like a regional strongman,” she remarked, further criticizing the president for his pardons of convicted drug traffickers and for undermining Venezuela’s legitimate opposition while seeking deals with Maduro’s associates.
Harris, whose name has come up as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, raised alarms about the risks posed to U.S. military personnel and regional stability due to Trump’s actions. “The president is endangering our military, spending billions, and creating instability, with no legal authority or clear plan,” she said. “What America needs is leadership focused on reducing costs for working families, upholding the law, and putting Americans first.”
The Maduros were processed in Manhattan by the Drug Enforcement Administration and later transported to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. On the same day, President Trump indicated that the U.S. would oversee Venezuela until a safe and suitable transition of power could be achieved. Harris’ office has yet to respond to inquiries for further comment.
