Kamala Harris Discusses Past Election Choices in Upcoming Book
Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently revealed that Pete Buttigieg was her top choice for running mate during last year’s presidential election. However, she felt that such a pairing would be “too risky,” as noted in excerpts from her forthcoming book.
Buttigieg, who served as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and is openly gay, mentioned in the book, “I would have been an ideal partner—if I was a straight white person.” Harris reflected that they were already asking America to accept a lot: a woman, a Black woman, and a Black woman married to a Jewish partner. “I think Pete understood that too, to our mutual disappointment,” she shared.
Ultimately, Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. The duo lost against Donald Trump and JD Vance in the November elections.
Reflection on Choices in “107 Days”
In an excerpt from “107 Days,” Harris elaborated on her thought process. “He is a dedicated public servant with exceptional skills, skills that even conservatives can appreciate,” she wrote about Buttigieg. “I love Pete; I truly enjoy working with him. He and his husband, Chasten, are close friends of mine.”
Harris and Buttigieg both competed for the presidency in the 2020 Democratic primaries but eventually, the nomination went to Joe Biden.
Harris’ book is set to be released soon, and its description suggests an insightful look into one of the most significant presidential races in U.S. history. “For the first time, Kamala Harris provides an in-depth perspective on a truly chaotic and impactful election,” it states.
As the release date approaches, there seems to be a mix of anticipation and curiosity about the insights Harris will share regarding her experiences and the political landscape she navigated.
