Harris dodges border wall questions

Vice President Kamala Harris dodged a question Thursday about whether the administration will continue building a wall along the southern border, as illegal immigration and the Biden administration's border policies remain top issues for voters.

Harris spoke to reporters Wednesday when asked about barrier construction, which was a hot topic during a CNN town hall meeting in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

“I want to tell you that my top priority is to put resources into making our borders secure. That's why I've said it loud and clear. I will bring back bipartisan border security legislation as president. I'm going to bring it up and make sure it gets done.'I brought the bill to my desk to sign,'' she said before criticizing former President Trump.

“The biggest problem we have right now is that Donald Trump is standing in the way of what was supposed to be part of the solution to a much bigger problem: America's broken immigration system. That's it. Please fix it,” Harris continued.

Harris has repeatedly disparaged President Trump over border policies that have led to a sharp decline in illegal immigration into the United States. Trump ran in 2016 on a promise to build a border wall and make Mexico pay for it, but it never materialized.

“How much wall did he build? I think the last number I looked at was about 2%,” Harris said Wednesday.

At City Hall, Harris was asked if she would agree to allocate $650 million to continue construction of the border wall, which she previously criticized as “stupid.”

“I pledge to introduce bipartisan legislation to further strengthen and secure our borders. Yes, I am. I am committed to passing comprehensive legislation to address our broken immigration system. “I'm going to work in between,” she replied.

Harris said Thursday that President Trump wants to address the issue rather than fixing the immigration system.

“We're going to solve the problem in a way that's within reach and close to a practical solution, if we have the determination,” he said, declining to answer questions about the border wall.
