During CNN’s coverage of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, CNN senior political commentator and former Obama administration official Van Jones claimed that following that night’s DNC speech, Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate, “is going to distance herself from Biden, but I think she can do that now without penalty.”
“I think Kamala Harris has accomplished something. Not only can she run away from Biden, I think she can run away now without penalty. She has the backing of her party,” Jones said.
He continued, “But she’s doing something. She’s solving a problem for the left. This whole thing was an implicit critique of what the left has had problems with. The left before we got here was all about justice, diversity, trigger warnings, reparations, and party distractors and scolding. That was the critique of the left. We were talking about justice, which is great, but now we’re talking about freedom. Not just diversity, but patriotism. Not just trigger warnings, actually, that’s gone. It’s very harsh. Reparations? No. Let’s fight for the future. Party distractors? No. We’ve legalized fun. We’ve legalized fun. We’ve given the party back to the Democrats. So this is a reworking of the genetic makeup of the progressive movement. They don’t just want to fight the Biden of the past, they want to fight a kind of anti-woke war against the left that died here and a new one has just been born. Because a Kamala Harris Democrat is something else, something else that you should be fighting.”
