During Thursday's “CNN Newsnight” broadcast, host Abby Phillips said Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris had not fully explained why she has made such a dramatic shift in border policy, going from supporting decriminalizing illegal border crossings during the 2020 presidential campaign to now saying she supports enforcing existing immigration laws.
“What I thought was missing is she doesn't explain her position on immigration. One of the questions is, as she said on a lot of things in 2020, as you said, I don't think it's a crime to cross the border, if you cross illegally, and her position now is, we should enforce the law. She doesn't explain the difference between those two things,” Philip said.
David Axelrod, a senior CNN political commentator and former adviser to President Obama, countered that Harris was receiving advice from political advisers when she was running for president in 2019, but Phillips countered, “That's not the case now. This is not my values. I think something more than my values has changed on this issue. She hasn't explained that.”
Earlier in the show, Phillips said former President Donald Trump, a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, has also changed his position.
