Former Vice President Harris joined California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) on Saturday to advocate for redistricting efforts in the state.
“I wanted to express my gratitude to everyone involved—those knocking on doors, discussing with friends, families, and even acquaintances—about the importance of people power,” Harris stated at a rally supporting Proposition 50.
She emphasized the significance of their efforts: “This serves as a reminder that we will not submit to tyranny. That’s not our way.”
Californians are set to vote on Tuesday regarding potential changes to congressional districts, an issue that mirrors a broader national conflict between Republicans and Democrats that could shape control of the House.
The Secretary of State in California indicated that a “yes” vote on Prop. 50 would mean new congressional maps would take effect in 2026, ahead of the next census in 2030. Conversely, a “no” vote would delay any changes until after the next census in five years.
This measure appears likely to pass.
Harris’ appearance comes amid efforts by leading Democrats to mobilize voters ahead of Tuesday’s election.
On the same day, former President Obama campaigned for Democratic gubernatorial candidates Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey.
“Every day, this White House exhibits lawlessness, recklessness, and just plain madness,” Obama remarked on Saturday.
Previously, he cautioned against Republican strategies aimed at manipulating election outcomes and endorsed California’s redistricting initiative.
Harris resonated with this message during her rally, stating, “This is not a situation where we simply complain about cheating. Recognizing their intentions is crucial.”
