Harris pledges to end taxes on tips for service industry workers – KOMO News

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris told supporters in Las Vegas on Saturday that she supports eliminating tip taxes for hospitality and service workers, a major issue for many chefs.

Her support follows policy. It was first introduced by a Republican rival.Harris endorsed Donald Trump as part of a pledge to support working families if she wins the November presidential election.

“I promise all of you here that if I’m president, I’ll continue to fight for working families, including raising the minimum wage and eliminating the tip tax for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said Saturday.

Harris’ support for eliminating the tip tax came after Trump floated the idea at a campaign rally in Las Vegas in June.

At the time, the union’s secretary-treasurer, Ted Papageorge, responded to Trump’s proposal by saying, “Relief for tipped workers is certainly needed, but Nevada workers are smart enough to know the difference between real solutions and wild campaign promises made by convicted felons.”

The proposal marks Harris’ first notable public policy stance since becoming the Democratic nominee, and she said she plans to unveil further economic policy plans in the next week.
