Harris rips economic hardships that began during her own administration in campaign speech

After President Biden boasted a day earlier that his policies were “working,” Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged that Americans are struggling with the current economic situation and vowed to make it better.

Harris made the remarks while campaigning in North Carolina, where she unveiled part of her economic platform for the 2024 election.

“We have made historic investments in infrastructure. [semiconductor chips]”Our economy is growing, driven by manufacturing, driven by clean energy. New numbers just this week show inflation below 3 percent. As president of the United States, I intend to build on this progress,” Harris said.

“And yet we know that many Americans still don’t feel that progress in their daily lives. The costs are still too high and, on a more serious level, for too many people, even getting ahead feels difficult, no matter how much they work.”

Harris also promised that if elected, she would “take on the big costs that matter most to most Americans.”

“Like food prices. We all know prices went up during the pandemic because supply chains were shut down and dysfunctional, but now the supply chains have improved but prices are still too high,” Harris said.

Critics grilled Biden during the first half of his administration over widespread supply chain problems that left grocery store shelves empty and delayed production of other goods, such as automobiles, for months.

Inflation and supply chain issues have become global issues as most countries struggle to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the United States has fared better than other countries in terms of inflation, many Americans feel a disconnect between their own economic situation and Biden’s initial claims that the economy is doing well, a gap that is reflected in Biden’s low approval ratings for the economy.

Economists who previously worked in the Obama-Biden administration also criticized Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan for over-stimulating the economy, causing a spike in inflation in 2021.

Harris’ comments came a day after it was announced that consumer prices rose just 0.2% from June to July, bringing year-on-year inflation to its lowest level in more than three years.

“I said they’re going to have a soft landing, we’re going to have a soft landing. My policies are working. I want you to start writing it like that,” Biden told reporters on Thursday.

Earlier that morning, Axios reported that Harris wanted to distance herself from Biden on the economy, and that her advisers were urging her to break with Biden on issues like high inflation.

Asked whether Harris would drop the unpopular “Bidenomics” moniker, the president told reporters, “If all the laws that we’ve passed work, the economy will continue to run.”
