Harris Took ‘Good First Step’ Towards Distinguishing from Biden’s Israel Stance, They Have ‘Same’ View

Speaking on MSNBC’s “Katie Tarr Report” broadcast Wednesday, Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) said Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has taken a “good first step” to distance herself from President Joe Biden’s stance on Israel and support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but that the two “represent the same policies.”

Moderator Yasmin Vosogian asked, “I want to transition to a few different topics while we’re with you. I know there’s a lot going on right now. We were also reacting to what’s happening overseas and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. There was the targeted assassination abroad of a top Hamas leader in Iran, the bombing and murder of children in northern Israel on Saturday, and the killing of a Hezbollah leader on the outskirts of Beirut. One of the issues in Biden’s campaign before he left office was his stance on Israel and his continued support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Now, Kamala Harris, who is at the top of the list of candidates, how does she distinguish herself from President Biden and his policies while supporting the president as vice president?”

Heinrich responded: “Well, I think the empathy she showed to civilians who had no responsibility in this is very important and a good first step. But I think the most valuable thing we can do here is to secure a ceasefire, not as a political thing, but just as the right thing to do.”

He added that Harris and Biden are “two people who advocate the same policies but express them in different ways.”
