Harris-Trump 2024 Showdown: What a new post-debate national poll shows

A new national poll taken after Tuesday's debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump showed Harris leading Trump by five points.

Democratic presidential candidate Harris has the support of 47% of registered voters nationwide, according to a two-day Reuters/Ipsos poll, while Republican presidential candidate Trump has the support of 42% of registered voters surveyed.

Harris' five-point lead is a slight increase from the four-point lead she had in the previous Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in late August before the debate.

Polls show voters agree with political pundits that Harris beat Trump in the Philadelphia presidential debate, the first and likely only one between the two.

Among survey respondents who said they listened to at least part of Tuesday's debate, 53% said the vice president won, while just 24% said the former president won.

With seven and a half weeks until Election Day and early voting beginning this month in some key battleground states, most national and battleground-state polls show the race between Trump and Harris within the margin of error. Harris has been gaining momentum in the weeks since replacing President Biden at the top of the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate list in mid-July.
