Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said Vice President Harris’ campaign will use her background as a lawyer to position her campaign against former President Trump as a “prosecutor against a felon.”
Brinkley made the comments on CBS shortly after President Biden announced he would not seek re-election in November and was endorsing Harris as the Democratic nominee.
“People are going to remember that Biden made the right call in the end. Campaigning is tough. Really tough. There’s no way President Joe Biden could speak seven times a day,” Brinkley said. “He wasn’t going to stay in the White House or Camp David or Rehoboth. You can’t lock down, you can’t campaign like that. At the end of the day, we needed someone with more vigor and energy, and VP Harris has proven that.”

“Not only domestically, but she’s been to 21 countries abroad and is unknown to many Americans, so this idea of a prosecutor going against felons is going to bring a new excitement,” he continued. “That’s how the Harris-Biden campaign will position her, and CBS News will be showing a lot of footage of Senator Harris going after Kavanaugh and women’s reproductive rights legislation… That’s Kamala Harris’ specialty…”
Harris faced intense criticism during her 2020 presidential run over her record as a prosecutor and California attorney general. She is running to defeat former President Trump. Earlier this year, he was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records in a trial he dismissed as “fraud.”
With Biden’s campaign halted, what’s next for Democrats?
Biden announced the shocking news in an open letter to the American people on Sunday, marking the latest stunning development in the 2024 election cycle. After refusing to back down for weeks despite liberals panicking that he would lose to Trump following his disastrous debate defeat, Biden caved. Biden is the first sitting president eligible for another term who is not seeking reelection since Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
Harris confirmed her candidacy for the Democratic nomination, saying in a statement, “I am honored to receive the President’s endorsement, and I intend to seek and win this nomination.”

Harris has been endorsed by former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as several Democratic lawmakers, but many Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, have issued statements about Biden’s decision without mentioning or endorsing Harris.

Democratic strategists told Fox News Digital that Vice President Harris is perfectly positioned to take on former President Trump with just months to go until the election, noting that she was voted by the same primary voters who chose Biden and that she has already built a strong campaign and fundraising base for a key contest.
