Harris’s Tough-on-Border Act ‘All Smoke and Mirrors’

Americans won't be fooled by Democrats' gaslighting about Vice President Kamala Harris' border record, said Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.). Breitbart News Daily Hosted by Mike Slater.

Marshall was discussing the Democratic plan boldly announced by Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), one of the architects of a pro-immigration border bill that was defeated earlier this year, along with Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.).

Murphy recently said Democrats “have to repeat this message over and over, but it's a pretty simple message: Kamala Harris supported a tough, bipartisan border security bill that would solve most of our border problems. Donald Trump supported it too, until he realized it would actually solve the problem, and then at the last moment, because he wanted chaos on the border, he told all his Senate allies to vote against it.”

When asked if this story resonates with voters in a different way than it has over the past six months, Murphy insisted, “Well, what we can do is tell the truth. We can't make up stories that aren't true. The truth is that Republicans don't support cleaning up the border and taking action. They showed that last year. Democrats do.”

Marshall provided the background to the failed border bill and how Democrats like Murphy are exploiting the crisis for political gain in the election.

listen:

“James Lankford was trying to do something, and it turned out to be a terrible bill. It's that simple,” Marshall told Slater. “They kept it a secret. They didn't tell us what it was. I asked James over and over: Does this address the asylum issue? Does it address the parole issue? If it doesn't address the asylum issue and the parole issue, it's nothing. Asylum and parole account for 80 percent of illegal border crossings.”

“At the end of the day, the Democrats aren't going to do it,” he lamented.

Marshall said voters won't believe Democrats' “smokescreen” plan that says President Trump's policies were soft on the border, leading to historic border security expansions that the Biden-Harris administration has squandered.

“Look, Americans are smarter than this,” he said. “They realize that under Donald Trump we had a secure border. Under Kamala Harris we don't have a secure border. This is all a sham. That bill was a sham. A Harris administration would have done nothing. I would argue that it would have made things worse.”

Marshall acknowledged that he was “deeply upset about what happened in the final chapter of this bill” and that in hindsight Lankford and Republicans “were set up to fail.”

“[Democrats] There were 15 to 20 people in the negotiations. We were one (Lanford). I'll tell you what I have to do in the tough negotiations. I'll send in some of the best lawyers I can. They got all the experts in there. [Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas is stirring the pot.”

Without naming Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) or other colleagues, Marshall blamed the leadership for engineering the doomed negotiations.

“Frankly, I'm going to criticize the Senate leadership for sending one person to this job,” he said. “It was an impossible situation for James, but I think he was right.”

Marshall agreed with Slater's assessment that Democrats knew the bill would not pass and had prepared it in a way that would prevent them from making their talking point: Democrats support a hard border and Republicans don't.

“It's like the debate situation,” he reasoned. “Kamala is trying to get out of the debate and make it look like it was Trump's fault. They're good at this. They wake up in the morning and they strategize and they think of things that I would never think of.”

Slater compared the Democrats' strategy to similar ones “trying to run a campaign that makes it look like Trump is the incumbent,” such as shifting the blame for the Biden-Harris administration's disaster in Afghanistan onto Trump.

Marshall said Democrats “have it in their DNA” to blame others for their own failures. “It's part of their strategy. Again, I don't think she can get away with this open borders record, this economic record and inflation. And yet, at the end of the day, I think all of this noise is about people who are worried about gas prices and grocery prices and people who are worried about the southern border.”

The Kansas senator said he has been traveling around the state holding town hall meetings and roundtables over the past two weeks and the concerns are clear.

“They're worried about the safety and security of their families,” he said, “They're worried about the price of gas, they're worried about the price of groceries. And while some of those things have stabilized, rent, child care, insurance premiums aren't going down and are through the roof.”

Marshall said Americans are suffering, but Trump's vision for improving people's lives will win him the election.

“People maxed out their credit cards and now they can't even get by before payday,” he said. “They're maxing out their credit cards. So Democrats can make all the noise they want, but at the end of the day it's going to come down to this: We're going to secure the border and make life affordable again.”
