Harry Enten Remarks That Trump Is More Liked Among Republicans Than Any Recent GOP President

Trump’s Approval Ratings Among Republican Voters

CNN’s senior data reporter, Harry Enten, mentioned on Tuesday that Donald Trump enjoys a level of approval among party voters that surpasses any Republican president in recent decades.

As of Tuesday, just five months into his second term, Trump had garnered a 63% approval rating from Republican voters. This figure is notably higher than other GOP presidents dating back to Ronald Reagan, who did not exceed a 60% approval rating by the fifth month of their terms.

“It’s quite remarkable… if we look back over the last 36, or even 37 years, at Republican presidents, Trump’s standing is significant,” Enten remarked. “For example, [former President] George H.W. Bush had only 46%. [Former President] George W. Bush had 59%. And Trump, during his first term, had 53%. Now he’s at 63%. He outperformed all the Republicans in this time frame—he even surpassed Reagan, who was high in popularity after surviving an assassination attempt.”

“This indicates that Trump has made history within the Republican base; he’s more favored among these voters than any of his predecessors.”

Reagan’s approval ratings initially stood at 60% shortly after an assassination attempt in July 1981, just four months into his presidency.

Trump’s appeal for the upcoming 2024 campaign seems to be directed mainly at Republican voters. This includes addressing immigration issues, with his administration noted for the implementation of substantial deportations of illegal immigrants and a significant drop in border encounters.

Statistics show a 99% decrease in migrant encounters and a 93% decline in daily border encounters, along with a 95% drop in “Gotaway” encounters, according to data released shortly after the administration assumed office. Following Trump’s second term, there were over 100,000 arrests attributed to immigration enforcement.

In addition, after a 2.3% increase in the Consumer Price Index between April 2024 and April 2025, inflation fell for the first time in four years on May 30. The Senate is currently discussing the President’s key legislative initiative, referred to as the “big beautiful bill.”

Enten noted that candidates endorsed by Trump won about 95% of their major races.

“Donald Trump is positioned as the dominant force in the Republican primary. Anyone gearing up to oppose him faces a significant challenge,” Enten stated, referencing cultural influences on political dynamics.

Trump has also initiated challenges against certain congressional representatives regarding the “big beautiful bill,” notably targeting Rep. Thomas Massey, Rep. Warren Davidson, and Sen. Tom Tillis, who announced his retirement shortly after Trump’s remarks.
