Harry Enten Says Republicans Are Outperforming Democrats On Immigration Despite Pushback

Shifting Public Sentiment on Immigration

On Thursday, CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten pointed out that Americans currently seem to favor the Republican stance on immigration enforcement over that of the Democrats. As midterm elections are approaching, Enten noted that Republicans have gained a 5-point advantage in trust regarding immigration, a notable shift from the 6-point lead Democrats had in 2018, even while the latter criticize the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation tactics.

Enten remarked, “The whole notion that Democrats could leverage the immigration debate seems shaky. Polls don’t support this; in fact, Democrats are in a less advantageous position compared to Trump’s first term. Many believe Democrats would manage immigration worse than Republicans.”

Moreover, Republicans have consistently been viewed as more trustworthy on border security. Enten highlighted that their lead has increased from +13 in 2018 to +15 now, based on a Fox News poll.

When considering the issues together—immigration, border security, and the Democrats’ proposals—it seems that Republicans might have an upper hand. Yet, polling indicates that the ongoing Democratic push for immigration reform could inadvertently benefit the Republicans, as Enten suggested that this is a topic where they should feel more at ease addressing.

As of Thursday, Trump’s approval rating regarding immigration stood at 45%, which is 11 points higher than Joe Biden’s approval rating from February 2022. While illegal border crossings surged to historic highs during Biden’s presidency, these numbers dropped significantly during Trump’s second term.

The previous election cycle indicated that immigration was a focal point for many voters, with early 2024 polls showing that a significant number of Americans disapprove of Biden’s handling of immigration and border control.

Additionally, some Democrats have pushed for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and, in various instances, have declined to assist federal immigration efforts against violent offenders. During his State of the Union address, Trump called on Congress members to support government efforts to protect citizens from illegal immigration; however, no Democratic representatives joined him in standing up.
