Harvard Awards Honorary Degree to Advocate for Israeli Boycotts
Harvard University recently conferred an honorary degree upon retired Professor Elaine H. Kim, a prominent figure known for her advocacy of boycotts against Israel. This recognition was part of a series of six honorary degrees presented at the university’s commencement ceremony.
Kim has a notable history of anti-Israel activism, having been involved with the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI). The initiative aims to challenge Israel through economic means, encouraging boycotts of businesses engaged with the nation. Their efforts focus on rallying academic circles and encouraging scholars and students to participate in the boycott movement.
This organization collaborates with various international academic boycott entities and partners with Palestinian groups and student activists.
Critics claim that Kim’s activism dates back well before the recent conflict, referencing past comments on Israel’s actions toward Palestinians, including allegations of ethnic cleansing. During the honorary degree ceremony, Harvard’s Provost, John Manning, commended Kim for her dedication to community service, stating, “We honor Professor Elaine Kim.”
Meanwhile, university president Alan Gerber read a quote from Kim regarding community building and the importance of making impactful waves.
Harvard has faced scrutiny over accusations of anti-Semitism, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel. These controversies have raised concerns about the university’s federal funding and tax-exempt status.
Some commentators, like journalist Ira Stoll, have criticized the university’s decision, suggesting it reflects a dangerous disregard for the implications of honoring a figure known for such outspoken views. Stoll concluded by pointing out that these actions could further bolster claims that Harvard does not adequately address concerns about anti-Semitism, as they honor someone associated with movements aimed at vilifying Israel amidst global conflicts.
