Harvard University’s Seminar on Race and Gender

Harvard University is offering a new seminar featuring Stacey Abrams, who has faced two electoral defeats, described as a “political mastermind.” The course will delve into the impact of race and gender in shaping American law.

Interestingly, the course description contains an error, listing her name as “Stacy.” It’s structured around the contributions of Black women and non-binary individuals in politics and education, titled “Law through Race, Gender, and Law Through Archives.” This session is slated for fall 2025.

Despite Abrams’ losses to Republican Brian Kemp in the Georgia gubernatorial races of 2018 and 2022 and her lack of a federal position, she is recognized in Ivy League schools as a significant figure among Black women in contemporary politics.

The course materials highlight influential Black women such as Michelle Obama, Stacey Abrams, and Kamala Harris, emphasizing their marks on 21st-century political and grassroots movements, as noted by Professor Myisha Eatmon, who teaches the course.

Eatmon previously stirred controversy by stating that “white privilege is a drug” in a November 2020 post. Since then, her account on X has been made private.

After her narrow loss in 2018, Abrams claimed the election was stolen. However, she faced scrutiny for this assertion during her second campaign, especially when labeled an election denier.

This seminar will also examine how race, gender, and sexuality shape political ideology through the insights of notable civil rights attorneys, philosophers, and authors.

The course, worth four credits, suggests that many scholars agree on the subjectivity of law.
