Notorious Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is likely to face new sexual assault allegations at his retrial in New York, and prosecutors say some accusers who previously shied away from coming forward are now ready to speak out.
At a court hearing on Tuesday attended by Harvey Weinstein, prosecutors in New York said they are currently investigating new sexual assault allegations and could present new charges to a grand jury by the fall, according to multiple reports.
“Several women in Manhattan have come forward to say they were raped by the defendant,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg said in court. variety report.
She said the alleged incidents involved “violent” and “traumatic” matters that fell under the state’s statute of limitations.
A retrial is scheduled for November, but Weinstein’s legal team has asked for it to be brought forward, citing his client’s ill health.
In April, a New York appeals court overturned Weinstein’s two felony sexual assault convictions in 2020. The 4-3 ruling said the judge erred when he “allowed prosecutors to call as witnesses a range of women who allege they were assaulted by Weinstein but whose accusations were not included in the charges against him.”
The decision shocked many in the entertainment industry, where Weinstein has reigned for three decades as one of Hollywood’s top producers and studio executives.
Whatever the outcome of the New York retrial, Weinstein, 72, is unlikely to go free anytime soon.
He was convicted in a Los Angeles criminal case and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
