During a Twitch livestream from China, left-wing streamer Hasan Piker expressed that he lacks patriotism for the United States. He made this remark on November 4 at a campaign event for New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, where he also reflected on the Cold War’s outcome, noting it was unfortunate that the Soviet Union didn’t prevail.
While streaming from Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, Piker articulated his feelings about the state of pride in America, saying, “I don’t have any patriotism for America in my heart, but it’s just a general thing.”
As he discussed the Soviet Union’s loss in the Cold War, he criticized the U.S. for what he sees as a deficiency in class awareness among its citizens. He suggested that circumstances have deteriorated to a point where ordinary Americans are beginning to realize that there may be alternatives to the status quo, which he believes favors the wealthy.
Piker remarked, “You can’t help but notice that. You can’t help but feel at least a little excitement about it.”
Originally from New Jersey and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, Piker has previously stirred controversy with remarks such as suggesting that “9/11 should have happened to America.” He also faced backlash for using a shock collar on his dog during a past stream, which resulted in criticism from Vice President J.D. Vance.
The Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 are known to have led to the deaths of hundreds, if not more, although China famously suppresses accurate figures regarding this event. The exact death toll remains elusive due to censorship.
