Several prominent media outlets have given a platform to communist commentator Hasan Piker, who has made controversial comments, including a past desire for him to be “killed” on Twitch. He has also entertained thoughts about the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk from a leftist viewpoint.
Piker was set to engage in a discussion about Kirk at Dartmouth College later this month. However, Kirk was tragically shot at an event at Utah Valley University last week. The two had previously debated numerous times at Politicon events.
In the aftermath of Kirk’s death, media outlets like Vanity Fair, Politico, and the New York Times sought Piker’s insights, asking about his reactions and the implications of such a tragic event for political commentary. During an interview with Vanity Fair, after watching footage of the shooting, Piker described his feelings as “quickly traumatized” but later critiqued Kirk for utilizing what he described as dehumanizing language.
Piker, who identifies as far-left, expressed his frustrations about a political ideology he views as morally problematic. He underscored the unexpected consequences of normalizing such views in society.
While Piker criticized Kirk, he denounced political violence from all sides. In a Wednesday conversation with Politico, he stressed that he has never condoned acts of violence and expressed fears about the potential political fallout following Kirk’s passing. Still, he felt that neither party offered a clear explanation of the situation.
He voiced concerns about the worst-case scenarios for political dynamics, foreseeing systematic persecution of dissenters and sporadic acts of violence. The New York Times also reported that some Republican lawmakers were attempting to exploit the controversy surrounding the motivations of the shooter.
Piker remarked that certain disruptions were being leveraged by powerful figures, including members of the administration and notable Republicans in Congress.
Media reports have characterized Charlie Kirk as a “controversial” and “provocative” figure. The New York Times published an opinion piece by Piker entitled “I was supposed to discuss Charlie Kirk. This is what I would have said,” where he connected Kirk’s death to larger societal issues, including lax gun laws and growing inequality.
Piker highlighted various social challenges such as rising rents and climate change, underscoring the importance of discussing these issues amidst political turmoil. A spokesperson for the New York Times defended the decision to interview Piker, stating it was important to gain a better understanding of Kirk and the current political climate.
Piker has faced criticism in the past for using violent rhetoric against political opponents during his Twitch streams. Earlier this year, he was suspended from the platform for making inflammatory comments. He has a history of advocating for extreme measures against those he disagrees with. Recently, his rhetoric has resurfaced, prompting reactions about calls for violence against capitalists and Republicans.
Fox News Digital reached out to Piker for comments but did not receive an immediate response.
