Hawaii airport evacuated, shut down after suspected hand grenades found

Hawaii International Airport authorities arrested a traveler from Japan on suspicion of “terrorist threatening” after he was found to have two grenades in his carry-on luggage.

Hawaii Police Department The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) confirmed to Fox News Digital that Hilo International Airport was evacuated on Tuesday after officers discovered two objects resembling grenades during an X-ray screening process.

Following the incident, police announced that suspect Akito Fukushima of Kanazawa City had been arrested on first-degree terroristic threatening charges.

TSA agents said they found two grenade-like objects while inspecting Fukushima’s carry-on luggage around 5:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, after he was scheduled to depart the country, the agents said.

As a precaution, the airport was evacuated and the Hawaii Police Department’s explosive ordnance disposal unit was investigating the grenade.

The TSA said that after further examination by experts, the grenade was “determined to be inert.”

At 6:45 a.m., Fukushima was arrested and transported to the police department’s East Hawaii Detention Center.

Hawaii State Police are warning the public that replica explosives, such as grenades, are prohibited from being carried in checked or carry-on luggage.

Operations at the international airport resumed at 6:50 a.m., the TSA said.
