On Tuesday, Hawaii Governor Josh Green (D) signed a bill into law that bans people under the age of 21 from not only purchasing but even possessing ammunition.
Guns.com report SB 2845 would make it a crime for an adult under the age of 21 to “own, possess or be under the control” of ammunition.
SB 2845 provides two exceptions to ammunition possession. The first is:[met] The first is a person who meets the “criteria for possessing a firearm” within the relevant age range, and the second is a person who is “actively engaged in hunting or shooting, or who frequents hunting or shooting areas.”
There are no exceptions for purchasing ammunition for the purpose of defending one’s own life.
Con 2 I got it. Hawaii State Rep. Diamond Garcia (R-Hawaii) opposed raising the age to purchase ammunition, saying the new law would restrict the activities of law-abiding people, not criminals.
“The vast majority of crimes committed are not committed with legal guns or legal ammunition, so it’s a mistake to think that new laws are going to change behavior,” Garcia said. “People who sell illegal weapons don’t care about age. They care about money.”
