Hawaii tourist bitten by shark while swimming, found ‘bleeding profusely’

A 20-year-old tourist visiting Hawaii was found “bleeding profusely” on Monday afternoon after an apparent shark attack, authorities said.

Hawaii police said the man, who was visiting from Romania, was swimming about 15 to 20 feet off the coast of Anaehoomalu Bay in Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Police said that at around 5:30pm, the 20-year-old man suddenly felt pain in his right leg and noticed a laceration on the top and bottom of his foot which was “bleeding profusely.”

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Queens North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Police said the victim and two other people swimming nearby did not see any signs of a shark in the water, but medical personnel confirmed the injuries were consistent with a shark bite.

Police said they have no plans to immediately close Anaehoomalu Bay following the suspected shark attack.

The incident came just a day after a respected lifeguard was killed by a shark while surfing off the coast of Oahu.

Tamayo Perry, 49, a lifeguard with the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety Department, died after being bitten by a shark near Goat Island, emergency officials said.

Perry was a professional surfer and actor who appeared in the films “Blue Crush” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and also appeared in an episode of “Hawaii Five-0.”
