Hawley presents legislation for farming and SNAP funding during government shutdown

Sen. Josh Hawley Proposes Funding Bill Amid Government Shutdown

Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri is pushing for a new bill aimed at securing special funding for farmers and food assistance programs during the ongoing government shutdown. His proposal seeks to revive federal support for the Farm Service Administration and the SNAP food program.

Despite the urgency, Democrats have thus far not collaborated with Republicans, even as this shutdown marks one of the longest in U.S. history. “We need to make Democrats face tough votes,” Hawley expressed in an interview. “This situation is ridiculous. Do they really want people to go hungry?”

The senator highlighted the importance of the farm bill, noting that many farmers, especially in Missouri, are in the middle of their harvest season.

Political Standoff Persists

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has led Republican efforts to fund the government multiple times since October 1, but Democratic leaders have rejected proposals unless sweeping budget changes are made.

President Trump has taken executive measures to allocate resources for military personnel during the shutdown, though a significant portion of federal operations remains on hold.

“While I respect what President Trump is doing to redirect funds for military and law enforcement during this time, he might soon find his options limited,” Hawley remarked.

Trump recently met with Hawley and other Senate Republicans, accusing Democrats of “holding the entire federal government hostage.” Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer continues to demand an extension of certain policies, like those related to Obamacare subsidies. While Senate Republicans express openness to voting on these matters post-shutdown, Democrats are insisting on guarantees for those extensions before any resolution.

Thune reiterated the Republican strategy of persistence, emphasizing their intention to debate the same issues repeatedly. He criticized Democratic demands for significant new spending, labeling proposals for free healthcare for non-citizens as “just the beginning.” He firmly believes that such proposals won’t gain traction in the Senate, House, or see the President’s approval.
