Hayden Panettiere Shares Disturbing Experience in Memoir
Actress Hayden Panettiere has opened up about a troubling incident from her teenage years, where a supposedly trustworthy friend placed her beside a well-known naked man on a boat.
In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she recounts this shocking experience, which she discussed during an interview on the May 11 episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty.
“You talk about a time in your career when a friend took you out on a boat,” Shetty noted, addressing the moment. “You were brought into a room with an older man and basically asked to perform a sexual act.”
Panettiere recalled feeling “shocked” and insisted the situation unfolded unexpectedly. “There was no sign that something like that was coming,” she reflected. “So… I was taken aback.”
She mentioned that it was only when she was “literally out at sea” that she recognized the danger she was in.
Although she thought of herself as mature at 18, she acknowledged her naivety. “Even though I had a great life at that age, scientifically speaking, your frontal lobe doesn’t fully develop until around 25 or 26,” she explained.
“I believed I could make wise and safe choices, but I wasn’t completely aware of my surroundings,” she added.
A significant part of her distress stemmed from the fact that a person she trusted had placed her in such a precarious situation. “It was orchestrated by someone I considered a protector and who I thought was on my side,” she stated.
According to Panettiere, her friend led her into a “very small room” and positioned her next to a naked, famous man on a bed. “She literally put me next to a man without clothes,” she noted.
Panettiere described her instinctive reaction to the alarming circumstances. “That lion inside me, that fire inside me… I felt a surge of energy and became fierce,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘That’s not going to happen.’”
She quickly sought cover on the boat, realizing that no one else seemed to care about her situation. “I didn’t feel any sympathy from those around me,” she mentioned. “This was not new for them.”
“I didn’t leap into the water or try to swim away,” she explained, emphasizing the sense of entrapment she felt.
“When you find someone you really trust, you hold onto them for dear life, feeling grateful,” she shared. “So it’s particularly painful to be betrayed like that.”
Panettiere did not disclose the identity of her friend or the naked man, nor did she elaborate on how she ultimately escaped the situation.
This Is Me: A Reckoning is set for release on May 19th.
