He encountered the wrong individual: Video showed a fight between a man and a martial arts instructor

Brawl at San Francisco Park Leads to Arrest

A man was taken into custody by San Francisco police after allegedly fighting with someone he probably shouldn’t have—specifically, a U.S. Marine veteran and martial arts instructor.

A recording of the incident, which occurred at Crissy Field park on Sunday, was shared by a local news outlet and showed a physical altercation involving James Hidalgo.

Hidalgo reflected on the encounter, stating, “He was a strong-looking guy, and maybe he thought he could intimidate most people there. But he just, well, happened to run into the wrong person.”

He explained to the reporter that his day had started off simply enough—taking his dog, Argis, for a walk around 12:30 p.m. However, things escalated when he noticed a man being vocally aggressive.

“I didn’t really think much of it at first. I figured he was just trying to get someone’s attention,” Hidalgo said. “Then I said, ‘Hey, I don’t know what you’re talking about,’ sort of waving my hands in a non-threatening way, and that’s when he lunged at me to throw a punch,” he added.

Footage shows the man throwing punches while Argis, his dog, jumped around them. Hidalgo managed to restrain the man until law enforcement arrived.

“I held him on the ground until the authorities got there,” Hidalgo mentioned. Bystanders had already called 911, and soon after, the United States Park Police responded, placing both men in handcuffs to gather details.

According to the U.S. Park Police, the suspect had allegedly attacked a stranger, and as a result, he was arrested.

The altercation ended with the other man being detained. Hidalgo expressed understanding about the police’s need to conduct their investigation, mentioning, “Having been in the military, I realize there are protocols, and you need to let the professionals do their work.”

Interestingly, the camera crew from KRON was actually in the vicinity for an unrelated story when they happened to capture the fight beginning.

Hidalgo received medical attention from paramedics but was later released, and he noted that he felt fortunate to have intervened in the situation. “Just think, what if it had been someone else, like a babysitter with a child? That guy, he had the physique to scare most people,” Hidalgo remarked. “He really ran into the wrong person this time.”

He signaled plans to take legal action against the assailant, whose identity has not been released.
