‘He Is At His Apex’: CNN Panel Marvels At Trump’s ‘Political Power’ After Assassination Attempt

A CNN panel on Monday marveled at his political stance in the wake of the assassination attempt and courtroom victories against former President Donald Trump.

Trump survived an assassination attempt at the rally on Saturday, and on Monday Judge Eileen Cannon dismissed the classified documents lawsuit. A panel on “Inside Politics with Dana Bash” noted that the Republican National Convention began at a time when Trump was at his political peak. “As this convention opens, Donald Trump will be the party’s standard-bearer for a third consecutive presidential term,” said CNN political director David Chalian. “At this moment, having survived an assassination attempt and now been proven completely innocent, my understanding is that this district court judge, on one of the key arguments, will dismiss one of the two federal lawsuits against Trump and will appeal it. Clearly, Judge Cannon has made some very favorable comments to Donald Trump, who appointed her to the district court, and I would imagine she may be on the shortlist for other appointments if Trump becomes president.”

“Given that the former president is safe from the attack and shooting over the weekend, it’s hard to imagine a better situation for Donald Trump to walk into this,” Chalian added, “and he’ll be given a hero’s welcome on this convention floor like we’ve never seen before for a candidate.”

Authorities identified the man who opened fire on Trump as a 20-year-old named Thomas Matthew Crooks. The gunman grazed the former president’s ear, leaving him bleeding.

“He couldn’t have written it better. Donald Trump has been a lucky politician in many ways, and now he’s on the verge of being named the nominee, you would expect an enthusiastic reception to this president,” said Nia Malika Henderson, senior political analyst at CNN. “There’s a palpable enthusiasm around Milwaukee, with delegates who absolutely adore this president. He’s at the height of his power, and you’re going to see some of that tonight. Of course, he’ll announce his vice president at some point, and it’s pretty clear who that will be. But the star of this show in many ways is Donald Trump, and these news stories only add to that.”

Monday’s Cannon Agreed He ordered the destruction of President Trump’s classified documents based on claims that the appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith was illegal and violated the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

“I’m struck by how unusual this situation is for Donald Trump. As David said, this is his third convention nomination, but it’s unusual in every respect. He controls the Republican Party,” said CNN’s chief domestic correspondent Jeff Zeleny. “We knew that, but what I’m watching as the days go by, and I think this ruling points the way, is whether Trump is able to turn around and win over some voters who may not necessarily be on his side, who may still be uneasy about him.”

“I know his base is very supportive of him, but I think the decision to invite Nikki Haley here in Wisconsin to speak on Tuesday night is a big signal, because she obviously had the support of primary voters, many of whom are here in Wisconsin. It will be interesting to see if Trump’s base keeps this theme of unity alive,” Zeleny added. “It’s a big challenge for them, but it’s also a new opportunity for him.”

CNN political commentator Paul Begala acknowledged on Monday that he “can’t stand” Trump, but said there was an “opportunity to be sympathetic” in the wake of the assassination attempt.

“Trump is currently at the height of his political power, arguably the pinnacle of his political career since he entered public life. It’s hard to imagine a different time. The Republican Party is totally united behind Trump like we’ve never seen before,” said CNN’s chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju.
