Canadian Armed Forces Apologizes for Systemic Racism

General Jenny Carignan of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) emotionally apologized on Thursday in Ottawa for the “systemic racism” affecting both past and current military personnel. She expressed deep regret for the barriers that historically marginalized Indigenous, Inuit, Métis, Black, Asian, and other racialized members, noting that they have often been mistreated by colleagues.

During her speech, which included a moving moment captured on video, Carignan acknowledged the CAF’s failures in creating an inclusive environment. “We have let you down…,” she said. “We have not created an environment in which you could serve your country at the highest level with pride and determination. We are sorry for the silence and indifference and the years of it.”

Reactions on social media varied, with some users deeming the apology inadequate. One comment stated it demonstrated “zero power” and made Canada vulnerable, while another questioned Carignan’s competency as the highest-ranking military officer. Some users went as far as to label the situation as one of the most embarrassing moments for Canada.

In a press release, the CAF noted ongoing allegations of systemic racism, emphasizing that the apology marks just a step in their broader efforts to eliminate barriers and biases, aiming for a more respectful and inclusive workplace.

Canada’s government has been moving leftward, previously labeling criticism of Islam as “Islamophobia” in a motion passed in 2017. More recently, in 2023, the country initiated a “Black Justice Strategy” aimed at addressing systemic racism.

Carignan’s heartfelt apology sharply contrasts with a speech given by U.S. Army Secretary Pete Hegseth, who focused on military readiness and decisively distancing the army from social justice issues. He spoke about revitalizing the Department of the Army’s mission and eliminating various political correctness, indicating a stark difference in military rhetoric between the two nations.
