Health establishment claims abortion-pill reversal unscientific — fine print suggests otherwise

Democratic Party officials and various pro-abortion groups have gone to great lengths to attack the reversal of abortion pills, arguing that the life-saving practice is dangerous, unscientific and ineffective.

Recent Reports Highlight The Biden-Harris Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a central promoter of this smear campaign, may have unwittingly planted the seeds of this narrative’s downfall.

The CDC: 2024 US Recommended Practices for Contraception The report argues that pro-life groups could potentially subvert medication abortion using the same tactics they use to fight it — and they wouldn't be the first to do so.

Mifepristone

Some women take a drug called mifepristone in combination with misoprostol until the 10th week of pregnancy to end the life of the developing fetus.

Mifepristone is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Shown The drug, which has been linked to a number of serious adverse events and dozens of maternal deaths, depletes the uterus of progesterone, a hormone needed to maintain pregnancy.

Misoprostal causes the uterus to contract and expel its contents (including the baby), usually within a few days of starting the medication. Mayo Clinic attentionHowever, there are cases where mifepristone tablets alone are not enough to completely end a pregnancy or remove the remains. In those cases, surgery is required.

Mothers who immediately regret taking the abortion pill are not entirely hopeless.

Reversal

Many pro-life organizations and medical professionals across the country are reversing abortions that involve abortion pills. Reportedly Progesterone is administered to counteract the effects of the abortifacient, an ultrasound is performed to confirm fetal viability, and progesterone treatment is continued for at least two weeks.

However, in recent years there has been conflicting research as to whether the use of progesterone actually reverses the effects of mifepristone.

“Using progesterone to reverse the effects of mifepristone is safe and effective.”

a 2016 Paper For example, a paper published in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests that taking progestin-based contraceptives (etonogestrel implants or depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injections) on the same day as mifepristone “does not alter success rates.” [of the medical abortions]”

Another study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology the same year found that Shown The administration of Depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), a progestin hormone drug sold under the brand name Depo-Provera, increased the chances of a “continuous pregnancy.”

Pregnancy Support News attention Here's why Depo-Provera can help:

When concentrations of progesterone, such as the progestin in Depo-Provera, rise, mifepristone is quickly cleared from these receptors. When prescribing APR, prescribers supplement with bioidentical progesterone that is similar to the one produced in the mother's body. This treatment quickly counters the inhibitory effects of mifepristone.

In 2017, a case report was published in the peer-reviewed European Journal of Contraception and Reproductive Medicine. Conclusion“The use of progesterone in early pregnancy is low risk, and the use of progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone in such circumstances may be of clinical benefit in maintaining an at-risk pregnancy.”

A 2018 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Issues in Law & Medicine claimed that “using progesterone to reverse the effects of mifepristone is safe and effective.”

Admissions Guide

Christina Brown of Pregnancy Support News Recent CDC Report Progestin-only injectable contraceptives such as Depo-Provera.

Under the “Special Considerations” section, there is a subsection called “After Abortion (Spontaneous or Induced Abortion).” There, the CDC states:

Coadministration of DMPA and mifepristone after first trimester medical abortion containing mifepristone The effectiveness of medical abortion may be slightly reduced and the risk of ongoing pregnancy may be increased. (US MEC 2)(1). The risks of concurrent use of mifepristone and DMPA and of ongoing pregnancy with DMPA administration after a completed abortion should be considered along with individual preferences and access to follow-up abortions and contraceptive care.

Brown noted that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, another vocal critic of abortion repeal, also appears to acknowledge that DMPA could save the lives of some babies.

In the October 2020 Practice Bulletin, ACOG stated“Injecting DMPA at the same time as taking mifepristone may slightly increase the risk of continuing pregnancy.”

Despite ample evidence that progesterone is safe during pregnancy, Administered during the in vitro fertilization process but also Preventing premature birth In the case of singleton pregnancies, and despite officials ostensibly acknowledging that placental reversal is possible, the American health care system appears adamant about denying remorseful mothers the option to save their babies.

Criticism

ACOG state “Facts matter, especially when it comes to policies and debates that affect patients. Claims about abortion 'reversal' treatments are not based on science and do not meet clinical standards,” the group's website says.

ACOG further notes that “concomitant administration of DMPA may slightly reduce the effectiveness of mifepristone for medical abortion, but the results do not demonstrate that DMPA 'reverses' medical abortion.”

ACOG has dutifully provided the left with the credibility it needs to attack pro-lifers.

New York Attorney General Letitia James Sued She cited concerns raised in May by Heartbeat International and 11 other pro-life pregnancy groups that criticized ACOG for pushing for the abortion pill's reversal.

“Abortions cannot be reversed, and treatments that claim to reverse abortions are done without scientific evidence and may be unsafe,” James said. “Heartbeat International and the other Crisis Pregnancy Center Defendants are spreading dangerous misinformation by promoting 'abortion reversal' without any medical or scientific evidence.”

James' lawsuit accuses pro-life groups of fraud when they claim that the abortion pills' effects can be reversed to allow a pregnancy to continue, which is exactly what the recent CDC report suggests.

James is not the first pro-abortion activist to crack down on those trying to heal mothers' regrets.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta (Democrat) also filed a lawsuit last year against Heartbeat International and a chain of crisis pregnancy centers for promoting medical abortions. Litigation He also addressed ACOG's claims.

Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis Ratified Laws It was stipulated that medical professionals who dare to reverse abortions could face disciplinary action in April 2023. The law also placed restrictions on advertising by crisis pregnancy centers.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Domenico blocked the law from going into effect late last year. state“The law at issue here violates these First Amendment principles.”
