Vance Critiques Milwaukee Mayor’s Denials of Election Fraud
Vice President J.D. Vance recently compared Milwaukee’s Democratic mayor, Cavalier Johnson, to a child caught stealing cookies. This analogy arose during Vance’s remarks regarding the mayor’s strong denials about election fraud in relation to the investigation of the 2020 presidential election.
Speaking during a visit to Milwaukee, Vance referred to a letter from Johnson, which criticized the federal probe into the election as unwarranted. In his message, Johnson expressed concerns over federal officers questioning election officials in the city, stating, “I see no justification for this activity. There is absolutely no evidence of wrongdoing.”
“It was a bit of a ‘he protests too much’ kind of thing,” Vance noted.
Johnson had previously invited Vance to meet him in Milwaukee, but the vice president, suggesting a trip to Washington D.C. instead, remarked, “I received a letter from the mayor… He wants to meet with me.”
When discussing Johnson’s repeated denials, Vance couldn’t help but share a personal anecdote. He recalled coming home to his young son, who, overwhelmed with excitement, exclaimed, “Dad, I’m glad you’re home! I didn’t steal any cookies!” Vance reflected, “It’s interesting that you volunteered that even though we haven’t even talked about it! Of course, he stole the cookies.” His imagery drew laughter from the crowd.
Vance ended his comments by emphasizing that such vigorous protests raise eyebrows and create suspicion: “So when you hear a guy protesting out of nowhere, saying ‘I didn’t commit election fraud!’ repeatedly… It’s a little strange!” Video clips of his comments circulated widely on social media.
In response, Mayor Johnson shot back, describing Vance’s claims as “false” and accusing him of evading substantive questions by redirecting the conversation to his own family.
