There’s a noticeable shift happening among health-oriented Americans, who are increasingly embracing dairy products. Creative innovations are popping up online—like mixing protein shakes with Diet Coke or using cottage cheese in pasta sauce. These trends, while a bit unconventional, highlight dairy’s potential benefits and delightful flavors.

Projected Growth in the Dairy Protein Market

The dairy-based protein market was valued around $15 billion in 2024, and it’s anticipated to expand to $22 billion by 2033, according to the IMARC Group.

Daniel Rehal, who founded the yogurt-based probiotic supplement Zogli, mentioned that dairy can become “superfoods” when fermented with beneficial bacteria. He explained that proper fermentation processes yield short-chain fatty acids and neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, potentially enhancing mood, energy, and sleep patterns.

With a significant portion of immune cells located in the gut—up to 80%—these dairy-based probiotics play a crucial role in overall physical and mental health. It’s fascinating to think that what was once just food could be categorized as a superfood.

Rehal reflects on the long history of fermented dairy, describing it as a “2,400-year-old prescription for better health” that modern science is only starting to grasp. It’s intriguing how established practices are now being validated by research.

Nutrition Experts Weigh In

Janelle Connell, a registered dietitian at Viome, shared her insights, pointing out that the advantages of dairy extend beyond just protein. Dairy also offers calcium, vitamin D, and A, serving as a satisfying and nutritious part of meals, particularly when sugars aren’t added. Moreover, it provides amino acids vital for muscle health.

Connell emphasizes that there are no “one-size-fits-all” healthy foods. In fact, nearly half of Viome’s customers find dairy problematic. She explains that individual gut microbiomes influence how people respond to various foods, including dairy. For some, it offers nutritional benefits; for others, it might cause digestive issues or inflammation. As a result, personalized testing is ideal for determining one’s unique dietary needs.

Connell encourages a focus on fermented dairy, while advising caution regarding raw milk due to potential contamination risks. If tolerated, fermented dairy can enhance gut health and improve microbial diversity, thanks to their probiotic properties.

“If you’re looking to reintroduce dairy, try it gradually. Don’t hesitate too much; just start.” Connell recommends beginning with plain fermented products to assess how your body reacts.

Finally, pairing dairy with high-fiber foods can bolster gut health. For instance, fresh fruit or nuts on yogurt or a kefir smoothie with berries could make tasty, healthful options.
