Nets Fall Short Against Mavericks Despite Strong Shooting
For the second time this week, the Nets reported no injuries among their players. Meanwhile, their opponents, the Mavericks, were dealing with significant injury issues.
Yet, the Nets still found themselves trailing from start to finish, ultimately losing 123-114 in front of 16,510 fans at Barclays Center.
Brooklyn managed to shoot an impressive 58.5 percent from the field and had Marvin Bagley III contributing 22 points off the bench. However, they struggled against a Mavericks team missing key players like Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, a former Nets player.
The loss leaves the Nets (15-42) still in the hunt for a favorable position in the lottery standings. They sit just one game behind second-place Indiana and half a game back of New Orleans (16-42), which has the pick from Atlanta. They are also trailing Washington, whom they lost to just three days earlier.
Michael Porter Jr. appeared to be breaking through a slump, scoring a game-high 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Despite struggling recently—averaging 17.8 points on 37.9 percent shooting and a dismal 16.3 percent from beyond the arc over his last six games—he didn’t manage to grab a single rebound.
Noah Clowney helped the cause with 22 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range. This marked his eighth 20-point game, a notable achievement so early in the season, yet it didn’t compensate for Brooklyn’s porous defense.
At one point, the Nets found themselves down by 15 points after Bagley sank a three-pointer, giving Dallas a significant 59-44 lead near the end of the first half.
Despite holding a short-lived lead of 104-96 with nine minutes remaining, the game slipped from their grasp when Terrence Mann, contributing 17 points off the bench, made a crucial three-pointer. This shot pulled Brooklyn closer, but not enough to turn the tide.
A pivotal moment came when Klay Thompson nailed a 30-foot shot, halting the Nets’ momentum. Shortly after, Brandon Williams hit a tough three-pointer over Nick Claxton, pushing the score to 113-106, and the Nets couldn’t recover from that blow.
Adding to the drama, Dallas’ PJ Washington limped off the court as the game neared its end.
