Police are looking for a “soulless” driver who abandoned a malnourished dog on the edge of the Arizona desert.
Surprise City Surveillance Cameras caught the moment when the red SUV drove to the end of Peoria Avenue on Saturday around 12:16pm
The passenger side door pops out, a small black and white dog pops out, and someone inside the car says “goodbye,” footage shows.
Before the poor dog can even turn around, the car door quickly closes, the car runs over, the desperate dog chases after it, and the clips make it look heartbreaking.
Luckily for the dog, local Joanna Bouzen was walking her puppy in the area when she witnessed the scene. She stopped to pick up the dog and did her best to comfort the abandoned dog.
“It was defeated. It was sad.” Beusen told the AZ family. “I was angry. I was surprised and shocked. So many emotions.”
Beusen said it is unacceptable for anyone to abandon their pets on the edge of the desert.
“I think they had no regrets about their actions and that's what it means to be malicious,” she said.
“I understand that things are difficult and things can be tough in life, but you don't have to be a soulless person,” added Bouzen. “And that's soulless.”
Officials said the unspoken dog has been detained by surprise animal control and the puppy can be released to the Arizona Humane Society where he can be adopted.
The Surprise Police Department said it had license plate information from the vehicle and has received “many hints” about the incident under investigation.
