Heartbroken mother criticizes Democrat Rep. Hank Johnson during sanctuary policy discussion

Contentious Congressional Hearing on Sanctuary Policies

A recent Congressional hearing addressing the impacts of illegal immigration witnessed intense confrontations on Thursday. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) and Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) faced significant backlash from grieving mothers who felt their personal tragedies were being dismissed while the representatives focused on criticizing “MAGA Republicans.”

This confrontation occurred during a discussion about the “human cost of sanctuary policies.” Johnson claimed that the testimonies given by the victim’s families were “Steve Miller-approved,” insinuating they were intended to provoke and fuel hatred against immigrants, particularly those of color.

After a brief moment of expressing sympathy towards the families affected by violence connected to illegal immigration, Johnson quickly pivoted to a partisan stance. He argued that the discussion would be better focused on the ramifications of the Trump MAGA tax cuts or foreign policy issues, rather than solely on crimes tied to illegal immigrants.

He further pointed out a series of violent incidents committed by non-immigrants, including the death of Lennie Goode, a man shot by federal authorities during a protest against immigration enforcement.

In response to Johnson’s remarks, Gill condemned his perspective as a “damning testimony,” attributing the chaos to what he called the Democratic leadership’s policies during the Biden administration, which he viewed as encouraging open borders.

The most striking response came from Jen Heiling, mother of victim Brady Heiling, who died alongside her girlfriend, Harry Helgeson, in a 2025 accident involving an intoxicated illegal immigrant. Heiling passionately stated, “My tragedy will never be okay,” challenging Johnson to truly listen and recognize their pain.

Heiling highlighted the lasting impact on her family, mentioning how her children are still waiting for their siblings to return and how their lives are forever altered. She criticized Johnson’s argument by asserting that her children did nothing wrong and lived according to the law, stressing the injustice of their deaths.

Following Heiling’s heartfelt plea, Patricia Fox, whose daughter Carissa was injured in a hit-and-run by an illegal immigrant, also called out Johnson’s comments, emphasizing that her race shouldn’t matter in this discussion. “I wake up Brown every day,” she said, asserting that race should not detract from the real issues at hand, which involve the deep effects of sanctuary policies on families.
