Rep Ro Khanna withdraws endorsement, urges Platner to exit Senate race

Maine Voters React to Graham Platner Controversy

The race for the Senate seat in Maine has taken a tumultuous turn for Democratic candidate Graham Platner. His past is under the spotlight, with troubling accusations from an ex-girlfriend along with criticism surrounding a tattoo he used to have. As Platner gears up for a primary battle against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, Maine voters find themselves sharply divided. Notably, Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna’s recent support for Platner is being scrutinized as well.

Recent developments include a significant backlash against Platner as Democrats rally to call for his withdrawal from the race. This intensifies following serious allegations of rape thrown into the mix. Khanna, who had previously backed Platner, has now retracted his support after a Politico report surfaced detailing claims made by Jenny Racicot, a Maine resident who had dated Platner.

Platner has firmly dismissed Racicot’s allegations, which involve accusations of breaking into her home and forcing unprotected sex in 2021, but he has indicated that his campaign team is reevaluating their strategies moving forward.

In a social media post, Khanna emphasized, “Sexual assault and violence against women is a red line that cannot be crossed. These allegations are very serious and credible. Graham Platner should withdraw from the race. I am withdrawing my support.”

Democrats at a Crossroads Over Platner

Khanna’s announcement came after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand jointly urged Platner to step down immediately, allowing the Democratic Party to select a more suitable candidate. They warned that continuing support for Platner could jeopardize resources in a critical battleground as November’s midterm elections approach.

Interestingly, Schumer and Gillibrand had already backed Governor Janet Mills in the contentious primary, delaying their endorsement for Platner until he secured the nomination.

As these allegations unfold, the response from the party is mixed but increasingly critical. Khanna had previously expressed a more supportive stance towards Platner, characterizing him as a veteran who overcame significant challenges. “Here we have a person who had a dark chapter in his life…who served this country,” he stated in an interview with CBS News.

However, following the recent allegations, Khanna, along with others such as Senator Martin Heinrich, who was an early supporter, chose to disassociate themselves from the candidate. Senator Ruben Gallego also distanced himself—but stopped short of demanding Platner’s exit.

Words like “civil war” within the party are now echoing, as many continue to rally against Platner. Senator Mark Kelly, echoing many sentiments, remarked, “Character and responsibility matter regardless of political party. It’s time for Graham Platner to resign…”

Even the far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, known for championing various candidates, distanced himself from the embattled candidate, stating, “This is beyond red flag. This is irreversible.” The situation remains fluid as Fox News Digital seeks further comment from Platner’s campaign.
