The mother of a 21-year-old Congressional intern, who was tragically shot last month in Washington, D.C., recently shared her appreciation for a heartfelt letter she received from President Trump regarding her son.
“I felt better,” said Tamara Tarpinian Yachim, reflecting on the note from Trump. “People often call [Trump] a monster, but I think he’s really not. He’s a kind person, especially to young people.”
“I was just amazed that he took the time to do this.”
Tarpinian Jacchim’s son, Eric, was shot and killed on June 30, along with two other victims, not far from the White House.
Eric wasn’t the intended target according to police. He was unconscious when authorities arrived and sadly passed away the next day.
At the time of his death, Eric was interning in Washington for Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kan.) while finishing his senior year at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, studying in the Eisenberg School of Business Administration.
His mother mentioned, “He loved his job and got along with everyone there. He worked with people from both sides of the aisle, engaging with kids from both the Democratic and Republican parties,” during a recent interview on the Howie Carr Show.
She added that Trump’s letter “really hit home.” In the memo dated July 17, the president expressed that he and First Lady Melania Trump were “devastated by the senseless acts of violence” and shared his condolences for the entire family.
“While you may never fully grasp Eric’s impact during his meaningful life, he will be remembered for his kindness and dedication to your family and his many friends,” Trump wrote. “He was also committed to our country. I know Eric was proud to serve his office, the 4th Congressional District in Kansas, and our nation.”
“Eric holds a special place in my heart, and I promise to never forget or forgive the horrific acts that took him from us,” he continued. “Know that my administration will work tirelessly to ensure safety and law and order in our cities.”
“May God wrap Eric in eternal love and care, and may He also protect you and your incredible children, Angela and Jeremy, granting you peace and strength.”
According to the Boston Herald, this letter is part of the support that Massachusetts Republican Chairman Amy Carnevale received from fellow Republicans during Eric’s funeral.
His mother mentioned sharing Trump’s words in front of several noted Massachusetts Democrats, including Governor Maura Healy. “The people in Massachusetts showed their true colors,” Tamara said.
Healy’s office informed the Boston Herald that the governor did connect with Eric’s family over the weekend, though specifics regarding that conversation weren’t shared.
As of now, D.C. police have not yet arrested anyone related to Eric’s murder.
