Heat interested in Klay Thompson as Mavericks plan to part ways with four-time champion

The Miami Heat Eyeing a New Star

The Miami Heat are on the hunt for another high-profile player.

Klay Thompson is reportedly looking to have another shot at competing after experiencing two tough seasons with the Mavericks.

The Dallas Mavericks seem to be considering trading or buying out the 36-year-old guard. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Heat are particularly in need of a player who can help create space. Thompson is said to be interested in “freeing up” so that they can add one of the best shooters in NBA history to a lineup that’s focused on winning now, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

Stein mentioned during a Bleacher Report stream, “Looks like the Mavs prefer a trade. It’s still early enough in the summer for them to explore those options first, but there are definitely things we need to monitor.”

Thompson, a four-time champion and five-time All-Star during his 13 years with Golden State, has faced challenges due to injuries that caused him to miss two entire seasons earlier in the decade. Now, his impact seems somewhat diminished, making him, well, more of a borderline threat on the court.

Last season marked a low point for Thompson, as he transitioned to a bench role for the first time since his rookie year.

He averaged just 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, while shooting a career-low of 39.3 percent from the field, and 38.3 percent from behind the arc. His contract’s final year will see him earning $17.5 million.

On another front, there have been some personal ups and downs. Thompson recently faced drama off the court, with singer Megan Thee Stallion publicly accusing him of cheating.

In April, she stated, “I’ve decided to end my relationship with Klay. Trust, loyalty, and respect are non-negotiables in any relationship; once those are compromised, there’s really no way forward.” She emphasized her focus on self-prioritization and moving forward with peace and clarity.
