Heatwave Forces Cancellation of Furry Parade at Anthrocon
The ongoing heatwave has led furry convention organizers to cancel a planned parade in animal costumes in Pittsburgh over the weekend.
Thousands of furries gathered for Anthrocon, WESA’s annual convention in the city. This year’s event marked its 20th anniversary and experienced record attendance, even as the National Weather Service announced a heat wave in the area. According to reports, there were 20,618 participants this year, surpassing the previous year’s record of 18,357. For the first time, weekend passes sold out.
Anthrocon has not responded to comment requests from media sources.

Furries are individuals fascinated by animals with human traits. Many of them create “fursonas,” which are furry versions of themselves. By September 2024, estimates suggest there could be between 1.5 and 3 million furries worldwide.
With the extreme temperatures, Anthrocon organizers decided to replace the outdoor parade and viewing party with an indoor costume meet-and-greet at the convention center. Nick Terwilliger, the convention’s safety director, noted that these suits can be quite hot. He expressed concern for participant safety, highlighting the growing number of staff dedicated to safety measures.
Some attendees, like Ohio-based firefighter Hayes Yocum, believed canceling the parade was the right decision, acknowledging the passion of fellow furries.
Discussions around furry culture can be polarizing, as past events have seen police interventions due to various incidents during conventions. In 2015, for instance, certain attendees faced arrests on serious charges, and there were reports of unsanitary conditions in the hotel.
A 2020 study indicated that about 10.1% of furries identify as straight, revealing a diverse community. Overall, Anthrocon continues to be a place for enthusiasts to express themselves, despite the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.
