David Axelrod Receives Harsh Reality Check on City Management After Discovering Man Unconscious in Chicago Heat

Concerns Raised Over Homeless Man’s Condition in Chicago Heat

David Axelrod, a CNN analyst and former chief strategist for President Barack Obama, has criticized Chicago’s handling of a situation involving an elderly man who collapsed in the sweltering heat. Axelrod described how, on July 1, he observed a man who appeared homeless lying unconscious on the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago. At that time, temperatures had soared, with reports indicating it could feel as hot as 107 degrees Fahrenheit.

Axelrod expressed his concern by speaking with museum security, who told him she had attempted to wake the man multiple times and suggested that he move to a cooler spot. Despite her efforts, the man remained unresponsive.

Feeling compelled to act, Axelrod decided to call 911 for assistance. However, upon explaining the situation, he was met with a lackluster response; the operator reportedly said she hadn’t dispatched anyone and, ultimately, refused to send help.

“So the man remained and passed out in the scorching midday sun,” Axelrod remarked. “Maybe that’s how the city of Chicago handles situations like that.”

Reflecting on his actions afterward, Axelrod felt regret. He considered that perhaps he could have tried harder to wake the man and encourage him to seek shade, admitting his embarrassment for not doing so. “Like so many others who ignored him, I moved on,” he observed.

While Axelrod didn’t delve into the larger systemic issues contributing to homelessness in Chicago, he emphasized a troubling thought: “I hope that all of us are not unintentionally complicit in assisted suicide.”

The situation has prompted questions about the city’s responsiveness to such incidents, and inquiries have been made to the Chicago Police Department for further comment.

This is an ongoing story.
