Heavy rain to hit parts of UK over weekend as flooding risks remain | UK weather

Heavy rain is expected to fall across much of the UK this weekend, with many areas at risk of flooding.

The Met Office said a new band of “severe thunderstorms” was expected to reach the south coast on Saturday and move north overnight, affecting central and southern England and Wales.

No weather warnings were in effect Saturday morning, but forecasters said more were possible after several were issued earlier this week.

Earlier, heavy rain lashed southern England and Wales on Thursday and Friday.

As of Saturday morning, one flood warning remained in place for Illston in South Wales, with two flood alerts also in place for the area.

The Environment Agency still has two flood warnings in place for southwest England, including populated areas around the River Lower Avon.

It added that the risk of damage to properties and transport disruptions from flooding was low across much of southern and central England.

Dan Harris, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Reminiscent of this time last week, there is more uncertainty than usual about the forecast for later this weekend.”

“This is due to a more complex weather pattern than usual, with multiple bouts of rain accompanied by locally severe thunderstorms, circling a slowly moving low pressure system.

“Warnings are being kept under review and will be issued over the weekend as confidence increases, so please check the latest forecasts and warnings.”

The Met Office said clouds and scattered rain were expected across England and Wales on Saturday, before more heavy thunderstorms reached the south later in the day.

The north is expected to continue the long spell of sunny, dry weather seen over the past few days, but the weather will become cloudy and milder.

The rain is expected to continue moving northwards through Sunday, bringing heavy rainfall to many parts of the central and southern regions.

Cooler, more refreshing temperatures are expected across the country over the next week, forecasters said, but added that the weather will remain generally unsettled.
