Hegseth calls for an official Pentagon examination of the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021

Pentagon to Investigate Afghanistan Withdrawal

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has called for an investigation into the controversial withdrawal from Afghanistan executed during the Biden administration in 2021.

According to reports, former President Biden made a sudden decision to pull U.S. troops from Afghanistan, but it seems there was, well, a lack of a solid plan in place. Some servicemembers have spoken out, expressing their concerns about the disorganization surrounding the withdrawal.

This hasty exit led to the tragic deaths of thirteen American service members due to a suicide bombing at Abbey Gate, which is located near Hamid Karzai International Airport. The chaos that ensued allowed the Taliban to swiftly regain control of Kabul, seizing numerous military-grade weapons and equipment left behind. The Department of Defense estimates that around $7 billion worth of such equipment was abandoned.

In a memo issued Tuesday, Hegseth remarked, “The Department of Defense has an obligation, both to the American people and to the warfighters who sacrificed their youth in Afghanistan, to get to the facts. This remains an important step toward regaining faith and trust with the American people and all those who wear the uniform.”

Interestingly, Hegseth mentioned that the Pentagon has already conducted a comprehensive review of the withdrawal’s outcomes, although they haven’t shared their findings publicly yet. He emphasized the need for an official investigation to ensure accountability for those in charge.

Reports indicate that Hegseth has tasked Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell with heading a special review panel aimed at evaluating previous investigations. The goal is to “analyze the decision making that led to one of America’s darkest and deadliest international moments,” as stated in the memo.

“This team will ensure ACCOUNTABILITY to the American people and the warfighters of our great Nation,” he added.

In a related note, when former President Trump returned to office this year, he mentioned that he planned to “fire every single one” of the military leaders he held responsible for overseeing the flawed withdrawal, emphasizing accountability for the failures.

In a separate 2023 report, the Biden administration acknowledged that top intelligence officials underestimated how quickly the Taliban would reclaim Kabul following the departure of U.S. forces.
