New Fitness and Grooming Standards Announced by War Secretary Pete Hegseth
War Secretary Pete Hegseth has introduced updated standards for fitness and grooming within the military. Speaking at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia, he emphasized the need to apply these standards with “ruthless, calm and common sense.” He highlighted that maintaining uniform, gender-neutral standards is crucial, stating, “leaders set standards.”
“Effective immediately, every member of our joint unit, regardless of rank, will be required to take the physical training test twice a year and also meet height and weight criteria biannually,” Hegseth declared. “Additionally, all personnel must engage in physical training daily during their mission. This is about common sense; many units are already implementing this, but we are now formalizing it across the board. This isn’t about fancy workouts like hot yoga; it’s about establishing leaders at every level.”
Furthermore, he discussed the importance of adhering to grooming norms, indicating that “this means no beards or long hair; individuality should not overshadow the standards.” He compared it to the “broken windows theory” in policing, suggesting that neglecting small issues can lead to larger problems.
“We must attend to the small details—this applies on duty and in the field. If having a beard is essential, special forces might be your answer; otherwise, shaving is required. The military isn’t meant to resemble a group of Nordic pagans,” he continued.
Hegseth also pointed out that some military leaders have failed to uphold these standards, calling it unacceptable. He declared, “The era of professional appearance has ended; there will be no more whiskers or lax grooming profiles.” His remarks suggest a strong shift towards stricter adherence to appearance and fitness.
In closing, Hegseth reiterated that the primary mission of the newly organized war division is “preparing for war, preparing for war, preparing for victory.”
