Hegseth says US will 'impose costs' on Russia if 'no path to peace in the short term'

Secretary of Defense Warns on Russia-Ukraine Conflict

During a recent address, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the United States will impose consequences on Russia if a peaceful resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine remains elusive. He emphasized that, “if there is no path to peace in the short term, the U.S., along with our allies, will take necessary steps to hold Russia accountable for its continued aggression,” while speaking at the NATO Defense Conference in Brussels.

Hegseth underscored the importance of a strong European-led NATO as the “most effective deterrent” against Russian actions, asserting the need for a “combat-credible” Ukrainian military to defend itself and deter further aggression along NATO’s borders.

In the context of international efforts, President Trump has urged European allies to implement more stringent sanctions on Russia to impede its invasion of Ukraine. Last month, the European Commission put forth the 19th package of sanctions targeting Russia.

“Our sanctions are painful. They significantly affect Russia’s finances and economic growth,” remarked EU foreign policy chief Kaja Karas. She urged the European Union to collaborate with partners until peace is restored.

In the U.S., there is momentum around a bipartisan sanctions bill that has garnered over 85 co-sponsors. This legislation aims to penalize countries that continue to purchase oil, gas, and other resources from Russia, though the White House has not yet approved it for passage.

Hegseth also called on NATO allies to boost their purchases of U.S. weapons for Ukraine. He asserted that peace is achieved when strength and respect are present, not merely through strong rhetoric.

The defense secretary mentioned plans to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities and indicated that talks of deploying long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine are being considered. President Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the White House on Friday, where discussions about these missiles are likely to occur.

“The president is coming on Friday. I know what he wants; he wants weapons. He wants those Tomahawks. Everyone seems to want them, and we have plenty,” Trump noted earlier this week.
