Helicopter rescues man from floods in Arizona's Maricopa County

Dramatic video footage has emerged showing a helicopter crew from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office rescuing a man who was stranded on top of his flipped truck, surrounded by rapidly rising floodwaters in Tonopah, Arizona. The incident occurred Tuesday morning when deputies discovered him sitting precariously atop the overturned vehicle, with floodwaters swirling dangerously below.

The video released by the authorities shows the man perched on the truck while muddy waters rush past him, creating an urgent situation. Given the severe conditions, first responders decided against a direct approach and opted for a “hoist rescue” instead, which they deemed safer.

A crew member was lowered to reach the man, effectively securing him in a harness before both were hoisted to safety. After the rescue, the man was transported to the riverbank, where firefighters were waiting for him. The helicopter’s pilot, Rich Dickner, explained that the water levels were rising rapidly and they had to act quickly. He noted that there was a noticeable increase in the water height from when they first arrived.

Deputy Lindsey Smith, who was lowered about 80 feet to the truck, reported having some difficulty finding her balance before she could secure herself and assist the stranded driver. Remarkably, the entire operation took less than five minutes, thanks to the urgency and skill of the aviation team, which the sheriff’s office praised for their prompt response.

The local weather conditions were exacerbated by the remnants of Hurricane Polo, leading to unprecedented rainfall across parts of the Desert Southwest and causing dangerous flooding. The Maricopa County Flood Control District has urged drivers to steer clear of flooded roads, advising that conditions can change rapidly and reminding everyone to take safety seriously.
