Asked on CNN’s “AC360” on Monday whether President-elect Joe Biden would do more scripted and less improvised events, Biden-Harris campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu said, “As you saw last month, you can continue to expect to see Joe Biden standing with world leaders on the beaches of Normandy, going back and forth with world leaders, coming to the United States and campaigning in all the battleground states. As he has always done, he will be available and he will continue to speak to the American people.”
“President Biden came on tonight reading from a teleprompter, and obviously he was on point and it was a fantastic appearance,” host Anderson Cooper asked. “Do you think we’ll see more planned appearances as opposed to impromptu remarks?”
Landrieu responded: “Well, I would like to make two points. One, Mr. Anderson, you yourself interviewed the president for 45 minutes. The president did not have any notes.”
After Cooper interjected that it was a “great conversation,” Landrieu added, “So you yourself … as a credible journalist, I can say objectively, from personal experience, that Joe Biden is going to be fine. Now, Joe Biden left the debate, he went to North Carolina and you saw him do a great job. And, of course, he did that tonight. So you can continue to expect to see Joe Biden as you saw him last month, standing with world leaders on the beaches of Normandy, going back and forth with world leaders, coming to the United States and campaigning in all the battleground states. You’ll see him do that out there. And I’m confident that he’ll continue to be responsive and continue to appeal to the American people.”
Cooper added that while he thinks Biden is “exceptional” at speaking about grief and loss, “his debate performance obviously raises questions, and that was months ago, so I think the questions are entirely legitimate.”
