Helping People Escape Feds ‘Heroic’, ‘A Lot of’ Civil Disobedience May Be Needed

On Friday’s “PBS Newshour” broadcast New York Times Columnist David Brooks commented on the case of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan. And while this may not be the case in this particular example, “predatory enforcement agencies, sometimes civil disobedience, and although we don’t know if we will reach this point, we can reach this point in a few weeks or months where acts of civil disobedience in many respects may be required.”

Brooks said, “Well, obviously they are trying to send threatening notes not just her, but all the judges and perhaps all Americans. But I still don’t know the specific details of this case, whether she escorted him through the ju judge’s door, whether she led him, or not.

He continued. “But there are a lot of people who are tempted by what the administration is doing, especially on the issue of immigration. And if she escorted this guy through the door, for me, if she escorted this guy, your man will help you escape. In times of trouble, people are sometimes called to be civil disobedience.

Brooks concluded. “And you can think she should not legally do this, and morally, perhaps even in this case, even in other cases – but even in other cases – frankly, predatory enforcement, sometimes civil disobedience. Such a fight should welcome such a fight. That’s one way you can change public opinion.
