Recent Court Order on School Book Ban
On July 11th, the US District Court published an extensive list banning certain books from Pentagon-run schools.
This list comprises 596 titles, stemming from a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) against the Department of Defense Educational Activities (DODEA). Many of these books feature themes related to sexual orientation, particularly LGBT topics aimed at minors, along with discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), reflecting more progressive viewpoints on various social issues.
Nicole Kiprilov, the executive director of Dod Watch, expressed her views, stating, “Our DODEA school is not a playground for left-wing activists pushing racebait, gender confusion, and anti-American propaganda. This isn’t about silencing ideas; it’s about preventing the intentional indoctrination of military children with radical ideologies that clash with the values we want to instill in them.”
Among the books mentioned, there’s one titled “Does my father think I am a boy?!: A book for transpositive children,” which follows a trans child named “Stefanie” and their father. Another contentious title, “Dude, You’re a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School,” delves into the dynamics of adolescent boys’ sexual behavior.
The list also includes more children’s literature like “Sex is a Fun Word: A Book About Body, Emotions, and You,” said to be a resource for children aged 8 to 10 to discuss topics around physical, gender, and sexual health.
Notably, several works by Ibram X. Kendi, known for his contributions to the concept of anti-racism, are among the banned titles. Robin DiAngelo’s “White Fragility,” which explores systemic racism experienced by white individuals, is also listed.
Other banned books feature titles like “Baby Drag Queen,” “LGBT+ ABC,” and “Uncle Auntie: Drag Queen Hero.” A biography of Rachel Levine, the first openly transgender government official, co-authored by Chelsea Clinton, is included as well, raising concerns since Levine has worked to adjust age guidelines for transgender surgeries.
Kiprilov articulated the administration’s stance, saying, “The Trump administration is advocating for military families by ensuring that DODEA’s schools highlight service and national values rather than focusing on activist agendas.” There has been significant pressure from the administration to eliminate LGBT themes and progressive ideas from educational curricula in government schools. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has underscored a shift back to values he describes as the “warrior spirit.”
In March, nearly 20 House Democrats urged Hegseth in a letter, asserting that the Pentagon was infringing on the constitutional rights of military families regarding these educational policies.
As of now, the Pentagon has not commented on the situation or responded to inquiries for further information.
