Here are the 10 most affordable states for booking flights, including New York.

New York Ranks Among Cheapest States for Domestic Flights

New York has recently been recognized for its affordability when it comes to domestic flights.

A report indicates that the Empire State is one of the top 10 least expensive states for air travel, with an average expenditure of $377.87 per traveler.

Researchers from a financial resource evaluated various factors, such as the number of hours residents need to work, based on local wages—data sourced from the Labor Bureau—to assess airfare costs across the states.

The typical ticket price in New York stands at around $287.79, while neighboring New Jersey has a median ticket cost of $308.70. Hawaii takes the top spot overall, with the lowest flight costs in the nation.

This ranking reflects the financial burden residents face when purchasing flights.

The authors of the study highlighted that by comparing domestic flight costs from each state alongside average wages, they found Wyoming to be the most expensive state for flights, averaging $611.73 per ticket.

According to the researchers, New Jersey and Hawaii remain the most straightforward options for booking flights.

In terms of local work hours needed for air travel, New Jersey residents typically spend only 8.41 hours while Hawaiians put in around 8.77 hours. In contrast, New Yorkers need to work approximately 9.75 hours for a flight anywhere in the country.

These findings surprised many, especially as travel industry experts had projected rising flight costs for 2025 compared to previous years.

Still, the affordability of flights in New York and New Jersey seems consistent.

Major airports in both states consistently rank among the nation’s cheapest. Not necessarily the first names that come to mind, they continue to provide economical options.

Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey is noted for being the fifth cheapest in the country, with an average fare of $167.88 for domestic flights.

New York’s MacArthur Airport follows closely at the 10th position, with average ticket prices around $285.80.

Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida leads the list with an average flight fare of $129.99, while Washington Dulles International Airport stands out as the most expensive hub at $509.23.

This information could be useful for travelers looking to save money on their next trip.

A frequent flyer from Tampa, Florida, recently shared a budget-friendly travel tip through a viral post. Christine, a travel influencer, suggested that not booking directly at the airport counter can lead to missed savings.

Her advice has resonated with many, attracting over 1.4 million views on TikTok as a valuable resource for booking flights affordably.
